Police Identify Suspect in Stabbing Attack at the Mall of America

Their alleged assailant, Mahad Abdiaziz Abdirahaman, is being held on suspicion of first-degree assault.

Police say the attacks took place in the dressing room of the Mall of America's Macy's store - not far from where shoppers waited in line to see Santa. One victim was allegedly stabbed after confronting a man attempting to steal his belongings from the dressing room, Potts said, according to ABC News.

Two people were stabbed at the nation's largest mall Sunday evening in what police say was an "interrupted theft". Police said the injuries to the two victims were not life-threatening.

Police said they don't believe the suspect knew the victims.

The stabbings occurred on the first floor of Macy's, in the men's department, the Star Tribune reported.

Kim Schwieters and her children were waiting to see Santa Claus near the entrance to Macy's when she saw police officers running toward the store with their guns drawn, the Star-Tribune reports.

Abdirahaman reportedly began stabbing the person when he or she noticed the theft and confronted the suspect.

Most stores close at 7 p.m. local time on Sundays, though some restaurants in the mall stay open until 9 p.m.
