Oscar Pistorius' prison sentence increased

Oscar Pistorius' prison sentence increased

The Supreme Court of Appeal, in Bloemfontein, has today increased the sentence of former Paralympian and Olympian Oscar Pistorius to 13 years for that crime.

Justice Willie Seriti of South Africa's Supreme Court of Appeal announced Friday that the five-judge panel had upheld prosecutors' appeals, according to The Associated Press, and increased the sentence to 15 years, minus time served. On Nov. 24, the court of appeal agreed with prosecutors and more than doubled Pistorius' prison sentence to 15 total years.

There was outrage across South Africa in 2014 when he was sentenced to five years for culpable homicide, which is essentially the same as manslaughter, and only served 10 months before he was released on house arrest. He was imprisoned a year ago.

On February 14, 2013 Pistorius was accused of murdering his girlfriend and model Reeva Steenkamp, 29, after her body was found in his toilet room.

At the same time, Steenkamp's parents have sent their love to Jayde Panayiatou's parents after her husband, Chris, was sentenced to life in prison for her murder.

"It is shockingly lenient and has accordingly resulted in an injustice", she said, referring to the sentence.

The Organisation Justice for Victims tweeted that 13 years was "still no justice".

Justice Legoabe Willie Seriti said Pistorius has yet to offer a sufficient explanation for why he fired those four shots and has failed to show honest remorse. Genuine remorse is missing - namely a reason from the respondent for firing the four fatal shots.

Technically, Pistorius should be eligible for parole after serving half of his jail term. (He) failed to take the court fully into his confidence.

Pistorius' legal counsel said the claims that his client is not remorseful are false.

Big developments in South Africa this morning.

. "When he realized he had shot Reeva‚ he was beside himself". He tried to make contact before and during the trial.
