Jahlil Okafor would welcome a trade or buyout from 76ers

After spending the past year attempting to trade him, the Philadelphia 76ers ultimately declined their team option on Jahlil Okafor for the 2018-19 National Basketball Association season.

The Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday did not pick up the fourth-year option on Jahlil Okafor's contract, setting him up to hit free agency this offseason. The 21-year-old native of Fort Smith, Arkansas has missed 62 games in his first two seasons, including a two-game suspension by the team in his rookie year due getting involved in a Boston bar fight.

And since he won't be on the court playing meaningful minutes in a 76ers jersey again, it's time this saga end in Philly and Okafor start the second phase of his career elsewhere, whether via trade or buyout.

"I only talked about it with Bryan and he just said that he felt that if he bought me out, another team would be getting me for free", Okafor said. That's why the guys have been out there on social media, but I've just kind of been in the dark.

Okafor got selected by the 76ers with the third-overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft. That's all I wanted to do was just play. "But that's pretty much where we stand right now", Okafor told reporters on Thursday (AEDT) at the team's shootaround. Even before the season began, Okafor was questioning whether the Sixers considered him a part of the team. "That's not happening here and I want to play".

The Inquirer reported that Colangelo declined to comment, but Okafor said Colangelo is the only front-office person he spoke to about a buyout.

Other teams - that don't care about winning this season and will have cap room next summer - are generally better of waiting to sign him then.

Last season, he found himself in a logjam at center, with the emergence of Embiid as a burgeoning superstar and both Holmes and Nerlens Noel on the roster (though Noel would eventually be traded).

Philadelphia 76ers C Jahlil Okafor has requested a trade or buyout from the team.
