Govt moves NGT over odd-even

"We have filed the review petition demanding exemptions for women drivers and two-wheelers for this year only", Delhi government counsel Tarunvir Singh Khehar told the media in New Delhi. The government has said that introducing this scheme may help reduce the air pollution and severe smog in Delhi and several other north Indian cities present since November 7.

"Why can not the Delhi government run ladies-only buses to solve the problem of transport during Odd-Even scheme", it added. "This may affect the safety and security of women drivers also", the application, which is likely to be heard on Tuesday, said.

Following the NGT order, the Delhi government postponed the scheme and filed a review petition in the tribunal opposing the ban on Monday as schools in the city reopened after a five-day break.

Reviewing the plea, the tribunal had asked why it can not run buses only for women to solve the problem of transport when the scheme is in place.

ANI reported that NGT had asked the Delhi government why it couldn't run ladies-only buses to solve transport problems during the days when odd-even was applicable.

What may have dampened the Delhi government's plan to re-introduce the Odd-Even scheme for auto rationing for a few days in the national capital to combat the deteriorating air quality, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) today rejected Aam Admi Party (AAP) government's modified petition.

Though NGT had cleared the implementation of the Delhi government's odd-even vehicle plying scheme, it has come down hard on the exemptions granted on the two previous occasions when the scheme was enforced.

The tribunal also rapped the Delhi government over "delay" in the procurement of 4,000 additional buses and noted that sprinkling of water on pollution hotspots was not being done properly. Following the tribunal's order, the Delhi government withdrew its petition.

Earlier in the day, the green panel had refused to exempt women and two-wheelers and ordered that diesel vehicles over ten years old be taken off the roads immediately.
