Garth Brooks says he lip synced 2017 CMA Awards performance

The 55-year-old legendary musician, who is now touring, lip-synced his performance of "Ask Me How I Know" earlier in the evening, and after picking up his prize he told reporters backstage that he wasn't well and it was necessary.

Brooks, who won his first CMA for Entertainer of the Year in 1991, noted that he's now having some of the best years of his career while doing it on his own terms. Many fans called the singer out of Twitter for not really singing during the show.

'And we chose to lip-sync it. "I'm not even sure what the whole diagram of business is anymore in music, but I'll tell you what: If you surround yourself with people who believe".

And it was for good reason - his voice was under the strain of 12 shows in 10 days, and as he spoke, the coarseness in his voice was evident.

'We made a game-time call on whether to sing to a track or lip-sync, ' he confessed. "Garth Brooks is lip-syncing". Some thought the decision reflected poorly on the legend, while others were more hurt by it.

@garthbrooks My heart is broken - how could you lip sync? "#Over. #CMAS #CMAawards #GarthBrooks #Garth #Nashville", one wrote. He reportedly said he was anxious his voice wouldn't be strong enough if he actually sang. "It's going to come right down to the wire because I didn't think I had a voice at the [Lifting Lives] gala last night, so we'll see how it goes", Brooks said at the time.

The 55-year-old singer was just one of the winners at the ceremony, which was also televised, taking home the top award for Entertainer of the Year. I get to be with the love of my life.
