FSU Fraternity Suspended After Student Dies at Off-Campus Party

Florida State University has indefinitely suspended fraternities and sororities following the death of a freshman at an off-campus house party Friday. "We appreciate the partnership and support from the Division of Student Affairs during this hard time". After the February hazing death of 19-year old Timothy Piazza, Penn State suspended fraternities and sororities from holding social activities during the spring semester.

Students will be allowed to remain as residents in their fraternity or sorority house.

"They must work with us and demonstrate they fully understand the serious obligation they have to exercise responsible conduct", he said.

It's unclear how long the suspensions will last, and Thrasher has also banned the use of alcohol during organized school events.

The fraternity's Facebook page, Twitter account, and webpage were shut down Friday night, hours after FSU's Greek community met in an emergency meeting.

"Like most universities, we worry about alcohol and drug abuse and other unsafe behaviors, and we are doing all we can to educate our students", Thrasher said. "They will have to participate in the solution".

Paramedics say they found Coffey unresponsive when they arrived at an off-campus pledge party and were unable to revive him, but it's not clear yet what happened. He died on the scene, police said.

The Tallahassee Democrat reports that officers were collecting alcoholic beverage bottles that were scattered on the home's porch as evidence.

FSU said the suspension also is in response to the arrest on Monday of a 20-year-old member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity for the sale and trafficking of cocaine. Check back for updates.
