'Doctor Who': First Look at Jodie Whittaker's New Costume

The BBC has revealed the Doctor's new look ahead of Jodie Whittaker taking over the iconic sci-fi role as the first woman to play the character.

The image shows actress Jodie Whittaker standing on a grassy hill wearing a stripey shirt with yellow suspenders holding up cropped trousers and blue socks and button-up boots on her feet.

The Broadchurch star has started filming in the role as the 13th Time Lord.

Casting a female in the role kicked up some controversy with the Whovain fan-base, but as with each new incarnation of the Doctor, we need to give her (and the new show-runner) a chance to show us how fantastic they can make Doctor Who be!

And another said they approved of the look as a whole - but wondered where her tie was.

It's a quirky ensemble and one that will fit right in with her predecessors' outfit of choice.

So we are beside ourselves to see what Jodie Whittaker will be wearing in the Tardis. With her gold suspenders, rainbow shirt, striped socks and teal culottes, it's very Colin Baker meets Peter Davison sans celery meets Tom Baker's scarf meets Mork from Ork and we're here for it.

Curiously, some Twitter commenters even went as far as complaining about Whittaker's lack of tie, somehow forgetting that many Doctors, like Eccleston's Ninth, Davison's Fifth and Capaldi's Twelfth, didn't wear one.

Logistically, though, we do gotta say that the jacket/robe/whatever that is looks like it'll probably fall off anytime she runs more than a couple of seconds.

She told fans not to be "scared" by her gender. It's more than an honor to play the Doctor. It means remembering everyone I used to be, while stepping forward to embrace everything the Doctor stands for: "hope".

BBC has released the first picture of Whittaker in her official costume as the Doctor, and it's a pretty stark departure from the dark outfits favored by her predecessors. Joining Whittaker in the new season are Bradley Walsh, Tosin Cole and Mandip Gill.
