Damascus Negotiators Meet UN Envoy At Geneva Peace Talks

Syrian Arab Republic delegation, headed by Dr. Bashar al-Jaafari, held talks at UN Headquarters with UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura within the 8th round of the intra-Syrian dialogue, SANA delegate to Geneva said. UN Special Envoy, Staffan de Mistura met on Tuesday with delegates from the Syrian opposition.

With the help of Russian military support, the Syrian regime has made major advances against its opponents, seizing back large chunks of the country.

The head of the Syrian regime delegation said that the regime refuses to engage in any direct talks with the opposition delegation and that the HNC must drop its demand that Bashar Assad leaves during the transitional phase in Syria.

But a government delegation landed in the Swiss city on Wednesday, reportedly after securing key concessions from United Nations mediator Staffan de Mistura, including keeping the Assad issue off the table.

The negotiations have achieved little in the seven previous rounds but there are hopes the latest may make some progress in ending the more-than-six-year conflict.

Hariri said the opposition had no preconditions for talks, but planned to discuss all the details of the political transition, including Assad's fate.

Earlier in mass media there was information that on November 28 in Geneva, will start the eighth round of inter-Syrian negotiations without the participation of the delegation of Damascus.

De Mistura added discussions also will include the issue of detainees, abductees and missing persons, as well as the need for full humanitarian access in any besieged or hard-to-reach-areas, such as Eastern Ghouta.

De Mistura had voiced hope the coming round would mark the first "real negotiation" on a possible deal to end the six-year war, which has claimed more than 340,000 lives and left Syria in ruin.
