Cong bags over 50% vote share for third time in Chitrakoot

Cong bags over 50% vote share for third time in Chitrakoot

Meanwhile, Members of Congress celebrated outside MP Congress Committee as its candidate Nilanshu Chaturvedi leads in by-poll.

"The BJP has no agenda, neither development or anything else, all that they know is to spread rumours, speak lies and prop up one false issue after another", he told reporters in Unnao enroute to Kanpur for a personal engagement.

The election was called after the death of Chitrakoot's Congress legislator Prem Singh. The BJP's defeat in Chitrakoot shows there is distrust and anger among the people. The Opposition Congress hailed the victory as a signal of the "winds of change" blowing in the political landscape in the country, ahead of the crucial Gujarat Assembly elections next month.

Congress candidate Nilanshu Chaturvedi won the bypoll, defeating his BJP rival Shankar Dayal Tripathi by 14,133 votes. Congress's chief spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala thanked the voters for reposing faith in the party. He had won the Chitrakoot seat thrice - in 1998, 2003 and 2013.

The Samajwadi Party President also took on the BJP on demonetisation and said that this move has created a class conflict.

From the very first round the Congress had been leading the counts. Despite the Congress campaign lacking enough firepower, the party's candidate won with a thumping vote share of almost 52%. "The BJP candidate has been defeated from his own village as well as the village of his in-laws".

However, notably, Shivraj Singh Chouhan made seven visits to Chitrakoot in the run up to the elections and addressed more than 60 big and small rallies.
