Australia recall wicketkeeper Tim Paine in Ashes opener bombshell

The bookmakers have Australia at short odds to reclaim the Ashes urn, but former Test great Shane Warne says England have no fear for the home nation and are a top chance to upset the party.

It was all about rivals Australia on Friday after forgotten man Tim Paine and maligned veteran Shaun Marsh earned shock recalls for the opening two Tests in the battle for the coveted urn, which gets under way in Brisbane next Thursday.

After Mark Stoneman (111) posted the visitors' first century on tour on Thursday, Malan struck 109 and captain Joe Root 83 as England were bowled out for 515.

Paine is the selection bolter and gets the nod despite few appearances for his Tasmania state side behind Wade this season. "He is a very talented and tough cricketer", Hohns said.

Australia's national selector, Trevor Hohns, was known as "cracker" in his playing days. Up until last week he had not scored a first-class half-century since the 2013-14 season.

"Cameron has been a player of interest to us for some time now", Hohns said.

Ex-Australia spinner Stuart MacGill slammed the Australian selectors, calling them "morons masquerading as mentors".

Former Australia bowler Brett Geeves was typically forthright with his reaction, dubbing Marsh's selection - the eighth time he has been recalled - as "confusing and contradictory", given the recent messages around Ed Cowan's non-selection in New South Wales' Shield team due to his age. And the Tasmanian keeper has gone even longer without a ton.

Moeen (1) and Craig Overton (0) failed to make an impression with the bat in what could be a final tune-up ahead of the first Ashes Test starting at the GABBA on 23 November.

In that match, Wade was preferred to Paine as the keeping option.

Full squad: Steve Smith (c), David Warner (vc), Cameron Bancroft, Usman Khawaja, Peter Handscomb, Shaun Marsh, Tim Paine (wk), Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood, Jackson Bird, Chadd Sayers.
