Amazon Releases International Fire TV Version to Bring Prime Video Everywhere

What's confusing about this "Basic Edition" is the $49.99 price tag, which inexplicably tops the official valuation of the non-basic Fire TV Stick variant. Then you can stream Prime Video, Netflix, TV shows, movies, and more. The basic edition of streaming device has a quad-core processor and 1GB RAM. Another possible difference could be the software - 2016's Fire TV Stick runs Fire OS 5, which is based on 2014's Android Lollipop, but it is unknown what Fire OS version the Basic Edition runs.

The Fire TV Stick Basic Edition sells for $49.99 (on the U.S. site, at least) and is available to purchase as of writing in more than 100 countries around the globe. Notably, it costs more than the original - the $39.99 (Rs. 3,999 in India) Fire TV Stick - but has free shipping to eligible countries. Amazon recently launched Prime Video around the world (both with and without the regular Prime service), so the device is a way to get folks on it without the need for a computer or smartphone.

Up until now, customers in most markets have been limited to watching Prime Video through an app on mobile phones and tablets, smart TVs, or through the Prime Video website. It's almost identical to the original, however, foregoes Alexa voice assistant support. In addition, customers can set their default language as Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, French, Italian, German, or English.

Amazon is investing billions to create content for Prime Video, one of the few services that is available without the main Prime subscription. Bear in mind that it doesn't work in 4K, however - for that, you'll need the $70 Fire TV dongle. There's also support for 1080p HD video streaming with the High Efficiency Video Codec, as well as Dolby Audio for a higher-quality audio experience. Amazon plans to eventually introduce it in Brazil and Mexico, among other countries. It must be noted that it costs $10 more than the standard full-featured Fire TV Stick. Those versions are more powerful and, curiously, also less expensive.
