Amazon Launches New, Secret Cloud Service For Intelligence Agencies

"Today we mark an important milestone as we launch the AWS Secret Region", said Teresa Carlson, Vice President, Amazon Web Services Worldwide Public Sector. The AWS Secret Region can operate workloads up to the Secret U.S. security classification level.

The new Secret Region complements the existing AWS Top Secret Region that was first made available in 2014.

Amazon today announced that its AWS cloud computing service now offers a new region designed specifically for the workloads of the USA intelligence community.

Amazon has actually already offered a top-secret region since 2014 million, which is basically a cloud offering Amazon built specifically for the U.S. intelligence community as part of a $600-million deal and the new Secret Region is an extension of the same Amazon-CIA arrangement. However, the new AWS Secret Region can be accessed by intelligence as well as government agencies.

Secrete Region will also be available for USA government organizations that are not part of the intelligence community provided they have their own contract vehicles, which are not part of the IC's C2S contract.

The need for government cloud services was underscored earlier this week after a security researcher discovered data pertaining to the Department of Defense's spying program was exposed on three publicly available AWS servers. The U.S. Intelligence Community can now execute their missions with a common set of tools, a constant flow of the latest technology and the flexibility to rapidly scale with the mission.

The AWS Secret Region will be accredited and assessed for compliance and security under DNI and NIST standards. AWS customers benefit from data center and network architecture built to meet the requirements of the most security-sensitive organizations. And as the USA government regularly contracts out work, trusted contractors can be granted temporary access to areas of the Secret Region as and when required and wherever they are in the world.

The Top-Secret Region was made available only for intelligence agencies.

The CIA's chief information officer John Edwards added his two cents to the new offering as well, stating "The AWS Secret Region is a key component of the Intel Community's multi-fabric cloud strategy". Amazon already offers a Top Secret area of AWS for the USA government, named (in case you hadn't guessed already) AWS Top Secret Region.
