A Welsh Assembly Member Facing Misconduct Allegations Has Been Found Dead

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said: 'This is awful and deeply shocking news.

Carl Sargeant had stepped down pending an investigation into his 'personal conduct'. "As a result of those conversations, I felt I had no choice but to refer the matter to the party". In a statement they said: "He wasn't simply a part of our family".

A spokesman for North Wales Police said it was investigating an incident at an address in Connah's Quay, Flintshire. A statement from his family, reported by the North Wales Daily Post said: "He was the heart of our family".

Welsh First Minister Carwyn Jones said Sargeant had been "removed" from the cabinet, while Sargeant said he wanted an independent investigation "to allow me to clear my name". "We will all want to gather our thoughts before paying proper tribute to him over the coming days".

He was elected to the devolved Welsh Assembly in 2003 to represent Alyn and Deeside in northeast Wales and served as environment minister and Labour's chief whip.

"We are devastated beyond words, and we know our grief will be shared by all those who knew and loved him". Our Parliament has lost a stalwart, and many of us have lost a friend.

Carl Sargeant, 49, a married father-of-two, was discovered dead at the family home in North Wales on Tuesday morning.

Mr Sargeant's death came a day after British political party leaders agreed to introduce new safeguards for parliamentary staff, as Prime Minister Theresa May called for a "culture of respect" in Westminster amid a slew of sleaze and sexual harassment allegations.

Sargeant, whose Twitter feed had mixed serious messages with humorous memes, described the allegations in a statement as "shocking and distressing to me".

The nature of those allegations are not known.

"On behalf of all the members and those who work at the National Assembly for Wales, I would like to express my deepest sympathy to his family and colleagues", she added.
