Yogi Adityanath govt proposes 'grand statue' of Ram at Ayodhya river banks

New Delhi:The Uttar Pradesh government has planned to build a 100 metre statue of Lord Rama in Ayodhya.

Yes there is a proposal for a Ram statue in Ayodhya. The grand statue is part of the state tourism department's plan to showcase "Navya Ayodhya", which aims to boost religious tourism in UP.

Yogi's decision to build a Lord Ram statue is keeping in line with BJP's obsession with statues.

A government communique said that the statue will be built after securing permission from the National Green Tribunal.

This move comes after the state government was widely criticised for omitting Taj Mahal in its recent tourism booklet namely 'Uttar Pradesh Paryatan-Apaar Sambhavnayen'.

A presentation on the preparations for Diwali celebrations in Ayodhya, was given by Awasthi.

The Union Tourism ministry has sanctioned Rs 133 cr for Ayodhya to be developed as a tourism destination. UP Governor Ram Naik will also attend, as will union Tourism Minister KJ Alphonse and Culture Minister Mahesh Sharma."Ayodhya has its importance, we can not neglect that".

The appointment of Yogi Adityanath, a prominent champion of building a Ram temple in Ayodhya, as chief minister after the BJP swept UP earlier this year was seen to signal the party's focus on the temple and on Ayodhya ahead of the 2019 elections. "The people's emotions are attached to the Ayodhya temple", he said, referring to BJP's Ram Janambhoomi movement back then. Adityanth is the head priest at the Gorakhnath temple in Gorakhpur.

The destruction of the Babri Masjid by a Hindu mob that was led by BJP veterans like LK Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi and Uma Bharati (all of whom are now facing criminal charges in an ongoing case related to the demolition in the Supreme Court) had triggered nationwide Hindu-Muslim riots in 1992.

Some designs of the proposed Lord Ram statue in Ayodhya make it look like the Colossus-that giant statue of Greek god Helios that stood at the mouth of the island of Rhodes.
