WTA Finals: Caroline Wozniacki pips Venus Williams for the title

But Williams, the oldest women to make the final, rallied by winning four straight games only for her opponent, ten years her junior, to convert her second Championship point.

It is also her first win over Venus Williams, against whom she had a 0-7 win-to-loss record coming into the match. While she may have been the underdog in their career head-to-head, the Danish tennis star has been fantastic on the 2017 WTA Tour.

"Obviously Venus is a great champion, just like her sister, and I have so much respect for her", Wozniacki said. Wozniacki was the dominant player throughout the 89-minute match.

Another three setter was in her future though, as she fought with the high-flying Caroline Garcia to end the bubbly Frenchwoman's challenge and so set up a clash with her little sister's best friend on the tour.

It was she who got the first break in the match, in the fourth game of the first set before Williams broke back to bring the set back on serve.

"Well, now I don't feel any pressure because the season is finished but I can imagine that it's going to be a little bit more hard", she added. She was a runner-up in 2010.

The American continued to be the aggressor but the Dane held on in the face of some brutal hitting and somehow forged her second break of the set with some exquisite deep groundstrokes to move within a game of taking the opener.

"She started mixing up the serve a little bit more".

"I have to work harder to stay there but in my mind now is just to enjoy the moment and we will see".

She says she was keeping it together, even as Williams sent shot after shot "whizzing by me". "I was hoping that if I'm going to beat her, at least once in my career, it has to be today".

"I just had to keep reminding myself that I was still up and I was the one who was leading, and I was the one who could close out this match right now".

"Going into the tournament, you know that it's going to be a tough one", Wozniacki said. Of course every week I went back on court, working.

Williams was seeking to win a 50th career title on Sunday.
