World Cup qualifiers take center stage

With just a couple of fixtures remaining for each team in their bid to qualify for next year's World Cup in Russian Federation, the European qualifiers are heating up, with many teams still fighting for a place in the world football's biggest showpiece event.

UEFA: France, which has a tenuous hold on first in Group A, could improve its chances at a World Cup berth with a win over Bulgaria on Saturday (FS2, 11:45 a.m. PDT).

Germany clinched a place at next year's World Cup in Russian Federation with a 3-1 win in Northern Ireland, while England beat Slovenia 1-0 to secure their berth.

Harry Kane continued his stunning goal scoring form with a 94th-minute victor as an unimpressive England overcame Slovenia at Wembley.

"But tonight, as a country, we go to the World Cup".

"I think the feeling has been in the last couple of worldwide tournaments we've undershot and I think we can go to this one really making the most of what we've got", said the FA chief, highlighting good team spirit throughout all age levels in the England set-up. "It is a work in progress and when I was given the job the aim was to qualify for the World Cup".

Martin Skrtel's own goal, just a minute from the end of normal time in Glasgow, leaves Scotland second in Group F, two points ahead of Slovakia and three in front of Slovenia ahead of Sunday's trip to Ljubljana.

Poland moved a step closer to clinching the top spot in Group E with a 6-1 rout of Armenia.

Who will England be drawn against?

While stadiums in Moscow and other cities are already World Cup ready, there are a few stadiums that need a bit of touching up before matches tip off in 2018.

The final of the tournament is a month later on July 15.

The Poles have 22 points, three more than second-place Denmark, who defeated Montenegro 1-0 on Thursday and look likely to reach the playoff, given that the Montenegrins must contend with Poland in their final match.
