UGC panel recommends renaming of Aligarh Muslim University and Banaras Hindu University

His assurance came after a section of media published a news item saying a committee, appointed by the university grants commission (UGC), had recommended for removing the word "Muslim" from the AMU and "Hindu" from BHU to reflect their "secular character".

One of the 5 committees, which did the audit of the AMU suggested the changes in the name, as reported by The Indian Express.

To probe complaints of irregularities against 10 central universities, the HRD ministry suggested the changes and it was set up in an audit of AMU on April 25.

Since AMU and BHU are a centrally-funded university, their name, and their functioning should have an imprint of secularism, neutrality, and efficiency. Citing the same reason for BHU, the committee recommended it's name be amended, too. AMU is a modern secular university with an Islamic ethos.

Among other recommendations to the AMU, the panel has asked for measures to elevate the condition of poor Muslims on campus and prevent "inbreeding", in which a majority of faculty appointments are of its former students. If the government wants to really make these institutions more secular by changing names then they must start with changing BHU name first.

Aligarh-based minority institution today said the idea is contradictory since the varsity was "always secular".

The audit, taken up by five committees, spanned across "academic, research, financial and infrastructural" aspects of the universities in question. The panel has suggested a five-year gap for all ex-students before they can be recruited as teacher in AMU. The committees are understood to have submitted their reports to the UGC.

Besides AMU and BHU, other universities that were audited by the panel included Allahabad University, Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University in Uttarakhand, Central University of Jharkhand, Central University of Rajasthan, Central University of Jammu, Mahatma Gandhi Antarrashtriya Hindi Vishwavidyalaya in Wardha, University of Tripura and Hari Singh Gour University in Madhya Pradesh.
