Texas Toddler Missing After Dad Says She Was Left Outside As Punishment

Mathews was charged with child endangerment and has since bonded out.

An Indian American special needs toddler has been missing since October 7, after her father allegedly put her out in an alley behind their Richardson, Texas home at 3 a.m., as a punishment for not drinking her milk.

After realizing she was missing Mathews said he chose to search further once the sun came up and passed the time by doing laundry.

A Texas toddler vanished on Saturday after her father sent her out to an alley to punish her for not drinking milk, according to police.

Mathews allegedly told police that he ordered Sherin outside in the early morning hours, telling her to stand next to a tree across an alley from their Richardson home, the Associated Press reports, citing an arrest affidavit.

Sherin Mathews, a three-year-old who suffers from developmental disabilities, was adopted in India by her parents, Wesley and Sini Mathews. She does not have the same grasp on language as a normal 3-year-old would. Mathews said he went outside to check on Sherin about 15 minutes later, but she was gone.

Sherin is described as 3-feet tall and 22 pounds with black hair.

Police say they are still trying to figure out why the family waited so long, but say Mathews was arrested on a complaint of abandoning or endangering a child. She was last seen wearing a pink top, black pajama bottoms and pink flip-flops.

"Why was the last sighting at 3 o'clock and the parents not call us until after 8 a.m., that's the question we want answered as well", Richardson Police Department Sgt. Kevin Perlich said to Dallas-Fort Worth NBC-affiliate KXAS. "So we're working off what he has told us". Marissa Gonzales, a CPS spokesperson, said that the agency had dealings with the family in the past. She was malnourished and physically underdeveloped and does not have the same language skills a typical 3-year-old would in the US, Perlich said. But police have said this is unlikely. "The mere fact that Wesley may be accused of a crime is not indicative of Mrs. Mathews".

"I don't know what happened", said Philip Mathew, Sherin Mathews's great-uncle.

It's been four days since a North Texas toddler was reported missing and authorities still have no idea where she is.

Starr says ethics rules and a potential conflict of interest explain why Sini and her husband have separate attorneys.
