Rock thrown from overpass kills man; 5 teens charged

"These kids ... Couldn't they just go skip rocks on the river or something instead of doing something so senseless?"

The teens will be formally arraigned in court on Tuesday.

"If there's any warning that both David and I can give", Sheriff Pickell said at the news conference, referring to himself and the prosecutor, "it's telling young people: You make a bad decision, you could be spending the rest of your life in prison".

The teens were charged as adults in Genesee County, FOX2 Detroit reported.

Investigators said the five teens left the overpass and drove to a McDonald's to eat.

"Someone threw boulders off the overpass and I saw two come down and ran over one", said Jim Schultz, a driver. The others were arrested.

Police said the teenagers damaged several cars the night of October 18th when they threw rocks off at least two overpasses.

Four other cars struck large rocks on the road and were waiting for police to arrive.

The rock, according to the driver, entered the passenger side through the windshield, hitting White, 32, in the face and then ricocheted from his face to his chest, Pickell said.

White lived in SC for most of his life before moving to MI, according to an obituary.

White was the father of four, local media reported.

In May, a woman driving outside Detroit was critically injured after a concrete chunk the size of a football became dislodged from an interstate highway and flew through her windshield, according to the Detroit Free Press.

"I don't think this was a deliberate attempt to take somebody's life".

"To propel the size of boulder down from the Dodge Road overpass to a 70 miles per hour vehicle that's headed southbound, you ought to know - a reasonable person would know - that is creating a high risk of great bodily harm, or in this case, death", said David Leyton, the county prosecutor, according to ABC12.

Police also said last week the teens appeared to be playing a prank.

White had a large family and relatives are traveling from Florida, Georgia, and SC to bid the young father farewell.

"I just hope they realize their actions, and how many lives they torn apart, and know that what they did was wrong", Cagle said at ABC12. His fiance, Amy Cagle, spoke out about the incident and how she had to tell her 5-year-old son that his father was killed coming home from work.
