Every now and again, Russian President Vladimir Putin makes headlines for a reason other than politics.

Kremlin press service informed that the Russian President made the statement on cryptocurrency at the meeting on application of digital technologies in the financial sector and introduction of innovative financial tools. This includes difficulties of compliance with anti-money laundering legislation and cases related to complications of identification.

According to Siluanov, it is necessary to design and adopt bills to regulate the mining and circulation of cryptocurrencies. "This is a very serious thing that we need to take into account", Putin said.

Speaking on the issue, Deputy Finance Minister Alexei Moiseev said on Wednesday that the preparation of a law regulating the use of cryptocurrencies may be delayed due to its "complex" nature.

At the meeting, Putin stressed that the state should regulate cryptocurrencies, but not create barriers for investors. He noted that it is necessary to institute the circulation of cryptocurrencies in Russian Federation and at the same time not to create unnecessary barriers.

Central bank chief Nabiullina has repeatedly said the regulator is studying the use of cryptocurrencies but sees risks of their use, including fraud and the financing of terrorism.
