Puerto Rico governor says relief arriving to storm-ravaged rural areas

Trump on Saturday criticized Cruz's "poor leadership ability" and accused some of Puerto Rico of wanting "everything to be done for them".

A sign that reads in spanish, Playita (neighborhood), need water and food, SOS, is seen Baldorioty de Castro highway, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on Sept 30, 2017.

Asencio, a Democrat, joined Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine on a visit this week to Puerto Rico's capital, San Juan.

President Donald Trump says the federal government is "engaged fully" in the effort to help Puerto Rico recover from Hurricane Maria.

Hurricane Maria hit the United States territory more than a week ago, leaving it without power and its roughly 3.4 million residents short on fuel and other supplies.

Cruz responded to Trump's criticism on Saturday, saying in an interview on MSNBC, "I was asking for help".

This is after accusing the San Juan mayor of poor leadership and being unable to get workers to help the US territory recover.

"...want everything to be done for them when it should be a community effort".

Despite the myriad of logistical challenges, Trump has repeatedly applauded the first responders for "doing a fantastic job". Carmen Yulin Cruz said on CNN: "This is a people-are-dying story".

As he began a speech Friday to the National Association of Manufacturers, Trump said he was sending thoughts and prayers to people of Puerto Rico.

The president also thanked Congresswoman Jennifer Gonzalez-Colon and U.S. Virgin Islands Governor Kenneth Mapp "who stated that #FEMA and Military are doing a GREAT job!"

Mr Trump is set to visit the island on Tuesday.

Ohio's Republican governor John Kasich, who challenged Mr Trump for the Republican nomination a year ago, also voiced criticism of the President's comments.

"The problem that we have with the mayor unfortunately is that unity of command is ultimately what's needed to be successful in this response", Long said. "Every single people. No matter what it is they've been stopping here and donating and helping", said Espada. "FEMA, Brock Long, has been on the phone virtually all the time with me, checking out how things are going", said Rossello.

"We are dying, and you are killing us with the inefficiency and the bureaucracy", Cruz said Friday.

Trump has been under fire over the federal government's response to the situation in Puerto Rico in the wake of Maria, the tenth-most intense Atlantic hurricane on record, the worst to strike Dominica in its recorded history, and the strongest in Puerto Rico since 1928.

"It was very painful being far away from them", she said. "I just - I don't know what to say". She drew a sharp rebuke from the city's mayor for saying Thursday that the federal relief effort is "a good news story". He's driving the truck to Cleveland so that goods can be shipped to people in need.

Elaine Duke made the comments upon landing in San Juan.

Cuomo asked Bossert to elaborate on what the connection is between Puerto Rico's debt and rebuilding.
