Petition signed by 85000 people asks Gov. Snyder to fire MSP director

"It is the sworn duty of the State Police Director to uphold the Constitution which protects all people in this State and to demonstrate respect for those principles", Michigan ACLU Director Kary Moss wrote on Facebook in response to the Etue's post. Michigan Legislative Black Caucus Chairman Sheldon Neeley also called for her firing.

Etue has twice apologized for the Facebook post, but Rep. Leslie Love, D-Detroit, said on the conference call that the apologies did not go far enough.

Governor Rick Snyder made the decision to stick to State Police policy and give State Police Director Col. Kriste Kibbey Etue what any other trooper would have gotten for the same policy infraction. "The Colonel has served honorably as an enlisted trooper for 30 years, and I hope we can come together as Michiganders to move forward and find common ground, rather than rehash past mistakes".

The Facebook post came at a sensitive time for state police.

The boy crashed an all-terrain vehicle and died. He says the director's words demonstrate that she's contributing to a toxic police culture.

Other supporters have said Etue had a free speech right to share the message, which was posted September 24 on her private Facebook page.

"I have full faith in Col. Etue's leadership", Snyder added.

"If Col. Etue were a trooper, we would expect her to receive disciplinary action ranging from reprimand to a five-day suspension without pay, provided she accepted responsibility for her actions, understood why they were inappropriate, and committed herself to rectifying the harm that she caused", the statement said.

In his statement Thursday, Snyder said he's ordered a review of trooper recruit practices and the standards for admission.

Democratic Sen. Vincent Gregory, who met with Etue and had wanted her to resign, told the Detroit Free Press that Snyder was taking the right steps by addressing cultural issues in government.

"Dear NFL", the meme shared by Etue reads.
