Palestinian delegations head to Egypt for unity talks

Home to almost two million Palestinians, the Gaza Strip has been reeling under a crippling Israeli blockade since 2007. The two men, who were unarmed, were detained and taken for questioning.

According to security forces, the cargo was intended for the Nuchba elite unit of the military wing of Hamas, which operates the terror group's underground tunnel system. There was no immediate information about their identities or the motive behind their crossing of the border.

"As the rocket fire endangered Israeli citizens and violated Israeli sovereignty, a tank targeted and destroyed a Hamas observation point in the southern Gaza Strip", the English-language statement said.

Retaliation was carried out as part of Israel's policy of holding Hamas, as rulers of the Gaza Strip, responsible for all acts of violence emanating from there even though the rocket is believed to have been fired by a Salafist group operating independently of Hamas. Earlier on Sunday night, the military had said a rocket fell in an open area in the Eshkol region of southern Israel.

Two Palestinian delegations, representing Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas Fatah Party and Islamic Hamas movement left on Monday for Cairo to conduct a reconciliation dialogue, which aims at ending more than ten years of internal split.

Hamas governs the Gaza Strip while Fatah has set up offices in the West Bank.

Days before Sunday's attempted attack, Hamas arrested a number of militants within the besieged enclave. In June 2014, a Hamas cell in the West Bank kidnapped and murdered Israeli teenagers Eyal Yifrach, Gil-ad Shaar, and Naftali Fraenkel and Israeli authorities suspected al-Arouri of coordinating the abductions.
