Oculus details inside-out tracking of Santa Cruz prototype headset

Finally, in addition to the new Oculus Go, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg also (again) teased an unreleased prototype VR headset codenamed Santa Cruz, which promises new positionally tracked controllers with up to six-degrees of motion.

The Oculus Go headset ships early next year for $199.

The new releases also include access to the Explore API that will let developer tap into Oculus" new "Explore' feed on the Gear VR and (eventually) Oculus Rift.

It doesn't need to be tethered to an expensive PC or a smartphone to work. That divide could be a big issue, because if the goal of the Go is to deliver high quality VR to everyone, the current selection of Gear VR content simply isn't enough. "Optimism is good. It's true that nothing is ever going to replace being with someone in person or doing something physical but when we can't experience those things, when we run up against the limits of reality, VR is going to make our reality that much better". We imagine it probably will, but it's not clear if the price cut will be as substantial or available as soon as the USA one.

The Oculus Go headset is created to be comfier than a smartphone holder for virtual reality. Devs will also be taking well to Oculus Dash since it will enable them to debug apps while they're still running in Unity, Unreal and more. Home and Dash will be part of the Rift Core 2.0 software update, due for beta distribution to Rift users in December. This move could likely signal a future where Oculus moves away from smartphone mobile VR as they shift to building their own platforms and letting Google dominate VR on Android which was a bit of an inevitability anyway.

"The combat experience in VR really gives you the chance to experience life closer to what a soldier would experience in real combat", Respawn co-founder Vince Zampella said in the video. You can display your in-game achievements or turn your library into retro cartridges you can actually use to launch apps. Oh, and Facebook is planning on letting your friends hang out in your Home as well.

Facebook further announced that it will soon sell an Oculus bundle aimed at corporations for $900 that includes a headset, touch controllers, three sensors, a remote, and three Rift Fits-a component for the device's facial interface.
