Macy's to open again on Thanksgiving

Consumer sentiment is increasingly moving against retail stores opening on Thanksgiving Day, but thanks to the prevalence of e-commerce, shoppers can browse and buy from most if not all popular holiday retail destinations online. Macy's stores will open at 5 p.m. on Thanksgiving and close at 10 p.m., which tracks retailers' holiday deals and hours, has received confirmation from seven US shopping centers that their Macy's locations will open at 5 p.m. on Thanksgiving Thursday, though none of those confirmed are in the KC metro area.

Opening on Thanksgiving evening became more common over the past couple years, with more and more stores choosing to extend their Black Friday into a "Gray Thursday".

Last year, Macy's started what now appears to be a new tradition of opening on Thanksgiving Day from 5 p.m. - 2 a.m., then re-opening at 6 a.m. on Black Friday. Prior to that year, the company was opening an hour later for the sales event at 6:00 p.m. on Thanksgiving.

One major reason for the decline in Black Friday shopping is that retailers have begun offering deals year-round to compete in the retail apocalypse.

Black Friday takes place on the Friday after Thanksgiving every year.

Standish continued: "In addition, with the rising popularity of "experience" gifts, competition for wallet-share is shifting from rivals in the retail industry to new competitors in other industries, such as travel".

As of this writing, William White did not hold a position in any of the aforementioned securities.
