Karthik, Thakur return to India's ODI squad

Karthik, Thakur return to India's ODI squad

Both India and New Zealand have announced their squads ahead of the three-match One-Day worldwide series that is scheduled to begin from October 22.

Ashwin and Jadeja are now playing the Ranji Trophy for their respective states and the former had even cleared the yo-yo fitness test.

While as for Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav, the two pacers played just one match each against Australia, with Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar hogging the limelight.

And India's celebrated spin twins - R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja - continued to be left out as well, as spin trio of Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel was retained.

Rahul, in excellent form in India's recent Test matches, has struggled in the ODI format in the few matches he has played this year.

"There is no particular reason [behind Rahul's omission] because Ajinkya [Rahane] has done well as an opener. Because, as of now, this is the best combination." a BCCI official told ESPNcricinfo. "We are trying to rotate everybody". While Ashwin and Jadeja missed out on a place in the Indian team, wicket-keeper batsman Dinesh Karthik has made a cut back in the squad. While he picked up only one wicket from two games, he bowled well for the most part and didn't do much wrong.

New Zealand held some hope of pulling off a victory when they had India A 90-6, but a patient 38 from Karn Sharma and rapid 40 from Shardul Thakur allowed the hosts to run the total down within 33 overs. With several middle-order contenders like Manish Pandey, Kedar Jadhav and Karthik, Iyer might have to wait a little longer. All three have been named in the squad that would take on New Zealand.
