Iranian Minister: Possible US Move against IRGC Not to Go Unanswered

The possible designation of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist group, among other measures against Tehran, was reported by the Financial Times, citing a source "briefed on the matter".

If the U.S. designates Iran's Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist organization-as reports state President Trump is likely to do-it would be a "strategic mistake", according to Iran's foreign ministry.

Reuters reports the threats continued from Mohammad Ali Jafari, the commander of the Revolutionary Guards, who said such a decision would show "the stupidity of the American government" and would force the Revolutionary Guards to "consider the American army to be like [the] Islamic State".

Iran's official IRNA news agency is quoting the chief of Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard as saying the US should move its military bases farther from Iran's borders if it imposes new sanctions against Tehran.

Trump is also expected to designate the IRGC as a terrorist organization, as he rolls out a broader, more hawkish USA strategy on Iran.

The IRGC has always rushed to assist the oppressed people in the world, the minister said, adding that United States statesmen are angry about the popular support the IRGC enjoys.

Trump has repeatedly bashed a deal signed previous year by Iran and leading world powers curbing Tehran's nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of sanctions. Trump has called the agreement the "worst deal ever negotiated", and pledged to "dismantle" it. She also stressed that the achievement in striking the long-negotiated agreement belongs to the worldwide community, not just the US.
