ICE says the gloves are off as California becomes a sanctuary state

Officials with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, known as ICE, said Operation Safe City captured scores who allegedly violated immigration laws, prioritizing those with criminal convictions, pending criminal charges, or gang affiliations.

Thomas Homan issued a statement saying that despite the declaration of California as a sanctuary state, ICE will continue to act even if it means there will be little cooperation from state law enforcement.

The Department of Homeland Security's Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency rebuked Gov.

After arrest, illegal immigrants would also have to be detained in facilities outside California. Federal immigration agents still will be able to interview immigrants in jails, and the California Department of Corrections is exempted from the measure.

Additionally, officers will be prohibited from arresting an individual exclusively based on a civil immigration warrant, becoming deputized as immigration agents, or participating in joint task forces with the federal government if the primary objective is immigration enforcement.

Thursday's signing follows other bills Brown has signed to provide protection and benefits for undocumented immigrants, including $30 million to fund college financial aid, funding for legal services and health care coverage for undocumented children.

California's specific law bans local law enforcement from "using resources to investigate, interrogate, detain, detect, or arrest persons for immigration enforcement purposes".

Ammiano said the bill doesn't go far enough to protect vulnerable immigrants from Trump.

Donald Trump ordered the hiring of 10,000 more immigration enforcement agents so the federal government wouldn't have to rely so heavily on state and local law enforcement to remove criminal illegals.

State Senate President Pro tem Kevin De Leon, D-Los Angeles, wrote SB 54 to counter Trump's campaign promise to crack down on undocumented immigration.

California officially became a sanctuary state for illegal aliens on Thursday with the stroke of Gov.

It prohibits jails and prisons from holding illegal aliens for arrest by federal immigration authorities. Brown signed 10 into law on Thursday, and they will take effect on January 1.

He threatened more arrests and said the bill "will undermine public safety and hinder ICE from performing its federally mandated mission".

The California Police Chiefs Association takes a neutral stand regarding the bill, the Sacramento Bee reported, adding that the sheriffs' organization remains against it and U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions had publicly urged Brown to veto it.

This means Californian law enforcement cannot inquire an individual's immigration status, arrest people on civil immigration warrants, or participate in border patrol activities or joint task forces with the federal government if the primary goal is immigration enforcement.

Asked for a comment about the bill, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the Trump administration is "spending every day we can trying to find the best way forward".

It is doubtful that the list of crimes that Brown insisted be added before he signed the bill would be reduced.

"The president will be laying out his responsible immigration plan over the next week", she said.
