Fox News Retracts Segment About Fake Vietnam War Navy SEAL

Garofalo also showed off his Purple Heart and other medals from his time as a Navy SEAL in the Vietnam War. 'What I did I'm ashamed of, and I didn't mean to cause so much disgrace to the SEALs'.

Anyone who has ever watched Fox News for an extended period knows the network has a weakness for Leathery Military Men.

Garofalo said he had falsely portrayed himself as a Vietnam vet and a SEAL for years.

The story, by Fox News correspondent Bryan Llenas, displayed Garofalo's work in progress which it described as a tribute to his hero, Trump, who "woke something up in me", Garofalo said. According to Navy Times, retired SEAL Don Shipley first busted Garofalo's lie, pointing to Garofalo's military records, and complaining about the error to Fox News Oct. 9, the day after the report first aired.

"Records show Garofalo did serve in the Navy from September 6, 1963, to September 6, 1967, as an aviation boatswain's mate ― aircraft handling, or ABH, a job that involves overseeing various ground-based functions involving aircraft", the Military Times reports. The publication said Garofalo told their reporter in a telephone interview that "It got bigger and bigger".

'The fact is that he did not serve in Vietnam. "Even though he showed us medals, Garofalo was not awarded two Purple Hearts or any of the other almost two dozen commendations he claimed to have received, except for the National Defence Service Medal".

Mr. Garofalo served in the Navy from 1963 to 1967 as an aviation boatswain's mate, or aircraft handler, according to service records cited by Navy Times.

Today, almost two weeks after its initial report, Fox News officially posted a retraction, which Llenas also sheepishly read on-air this morning in what the on-air host gamely called a "quick correction".

The Navy Times story is a great read, detailing Shipley's efforts to get FNC to retract the story.

"You are a hero", Llenas told Garofalo in the segment.

"I don't like to hear that", Garofalo said, cutting him off.

It is true that Garafalo is a glass artist and a veteran.

Garafalo has presented his hand crafted presidential seals to former Presidents George H.W. Bush and Ronald Reagan.

Fox also issued a lengthy statement, claiming it hadn't investigated Garofalo's military past before the segment aired because he claimed it was "covert". Fox News went on to apologize to their viewers, veterans and servicemen and women.
