Duncan retains Safeway Open lead

Tyler Duncan chipped in from the fringe for eagle on the par-five 18th hole to take the second-round lead.

"It's insane, it's nothing I could have ever dreamed of", Duncan said. "But it probably will after dinner when I'm laying in bed". I'm not sure what it is.

Duncan began Saturday with a birdie but fought from there, posting four bogeys against four more birdies to come in at 71. He had a chance for a 59, but parred the final two holes.

Duncan, Hadley and Bud Cauley will tee off at 12:30 p.m. local time (3:30 p.m. EST) Sunday afternoon.

CHASING: Chesson Hadley, a day after a course-record 61, stays steady thanks to a 70.

“I played really well the whole day, ” said Hoge, whose PGA Tour career best is a tie for fourth in August at the Barracuda Open. I was two over through four or five holes. "I hung in there and just didn't panic and kept myself in a good spot for (Sunday)".

Making his second career PGA Tour start, Duncan leads by a stroke from defending champion Brendan Steele. Emiliano Grillo (third-round 68) and Graham DeLaet (69) are tied for fifth at 11 under.

"My game is back to where I've been wanting it to be, and I have an opportunity to start the new season with a little bit of momentum", said Mickelson, who opened last season with an eighth-place finish in the Safeway Open, shooting four rounds in the 60s. He finished eighth a year ago and is seeking is first title since the 2013 British Open.

“I love it. I liked to the moment I stepped foot on it, ” said Johnson, whose last title was the 2015 British Open.

Hadley also had three bogeys on the front nine and four for the round, but he added six birdies. But Mickelson, playing in his 91st PGA Tour event since his last victory, missed a short putt for birdie on the 16th and short putt for par on the 17th. “I was in a lot of fairways, on a lot of greens and the made a few putts.”.
