Cleverley hands Watford rare home win over Arsenal

A 71st-minute equaliser from the penalty spot by substitute Troy Deeney got the host on level terms and set up a thrilling finish.

Watford moved up to fourth in the Premier League with a last-gasp 2-1 win over Arsenal thanks to Tom Cleverley's stoppage-time goal.

"It was a scandalous decision to give a penalty like that", Wenger told BBC Sport. "The manager said we were too shy in the first half".

"It is a scandalous decision".

Tom Cleverley hit a last-gasp victor as Watford came from behind to beat Arsenal and check the Gunners' recent run of form. "No penalty, no goal".

"It's important, I didn't see a dive or a simulation". Mind you, the Germany defender was making his first Premier League start in 532 days. "All the greatest players in the world attract fouls".

They indeed took the lead with minutes to go until the break, as Per Mertesacker easily rose above Cleverley to power home a header.

Arsene Wenger admits Mesut Ozil was "guilty" of failing to secure victory for Arsenal in their 2-1 defeat to Watford on Saturday.

Moments later came the penalty drama, and then in injury time when Andre Carrillo's shot was blocked Cleverley lashed in a dramatic victor.

Richarlison curled an effort wide for Watford early in the second half before Ozil was introduced off the bench in place of a limping Welbeck. The fact that it is Merson with these negative comments about the Chilean's potential state of mind should come as no surprise I suppose, because he has not had many nice things to say about his old club in recent years.

"After that, at 1-1, there was no need to panic. We keep believing all the time, even when the result isn't going for us".

Arsenal were attempting to climb into the top four but instead it is the Hornets who find themselves in the Champions League spots.

"When I looked to change Iwobi with [Jack] Wilshere, Koscielny was not right".

After an unbeaten September, Arsenal have gotten their Premier League campaign back on track after disappointing losses to Stoke and Liverpool.
