Braid chopping: Mobile internet services snapped in Kashmir

Rumours of braid chopping that began from Kulgam in south Kashmira, observers said, could now provide an opportunity to anti-social elements to give a political dimension to the weird buzz.

"India is frightened with the commitment people have shown towards the freedom movement". The Hurriyat Conference statement said that the Hurriyat leaders informed people about "such tactics" at various places today in spite of the government restrictions.

Just around the time reports of the unsolved mystery of braid chopping have ended in different parts of the country, a frenzied mob killed a 70-year-old man Abdul Salam Wani of south Kashmir's Anantnag, mistaking him for a braid chopper late Thursday night.

They were raising slogans against the braid-cutting incidents and asked the authorities to nab the culprits behind these criminal acts. Dozens of incidents of braid-chopping have been reported in the state in the last few weeks, but nobody has been arrested.

Police said that restrictions under section 144 CrPc will remain in force on Friday in areas under the jurisdiction of Khanyar, Nowhatta, Rainawari, MR Gunj, Safa Kadal, Maisuma and Krakkhud police station in Srinagar city.

Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir): Separatist Yasin Malik was detained, while another separatist Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was placed under house arrest on Friday ahead of their planned protest over the rise in braid chopping incidents in Srinagar.

He succumbed this morning.
