Arsene Wenger blames referee after Arsenal suffer shock defeat at Watford

Arsenal lost 2-1 to Watford in the return to Premier League action despite taking the lead through the returning Per Mertesacker.

Troy Deeney scored from the spot in the 71st minute to cancel out Per Mertesacker's opener after Gunners right-back Hector Bellerin was ruled to have fouled Richarlison in the box. Silva's side moved to fourth in the division and Wenger was left cursing the referee's decision to award a penalty against his team. Nothing. We can talk and talk and talk.

'For me, as a player, I just think happy days. At the end of the day they scored.

And in the dying seconds of the match, Tom Cleverley was in the right place at the right time to crash home a rebound for the victor.

"We know it will be a really tough game, we have to be really organised and focused but we will be back to work on Monday to hopefully get a good result next Saturday".

"I have seen the penalty now and I respect the decision of the referee", he was reported as saying. "That is as clear an example of a dive as you're going to see and the FA's review panel need to have a look at that".

Substitute Troy Deeney equalised from the spot after Richarlison was fouled by Hector Bellerin and that gave the home side the momentum to win the game and they did just that thanks to Tom Cleverley's injury time victor.

"I've heard Wenger's already blaming (the penalty) as the reason for why they lost", Deeney said on BT Sports show Premier League Tonight. I nodded it down, the crowd got up - "yeah we've got somebody who can win it" - and they all just backed off.
