8-Year-Old Dies After Falling From Carnival Cruise Ship Balcony

An eight-year-old girl has died after falling from the balcony of a cruise ship's interior atrium while docked at a port in Miami.

ABC News reports that paramedics later provided first aid to the girl before taking her to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital, where she initially was in critical condition.

"We understand that the child may have fallen 20 or so feet from a landing", Miami Fire-Rescue spokesman Capt. Ignatius Carroll said at a news conference, CNN reported.

It's unclear what led the child to fall.

The young girl fell onto the ship's lower deck at the PortMiami seaport at 8:15 a.m.

The Miami-Dade Police Department's Homicide Bureau is investigating.

A statement from Miami-based Carnival Cruise Lines, a subsidiary of US-British Carnival Corporation & PLC, to 7News said: Our most heartfelt condolences are with the family at this very hard time.

The $500 million ship was built in 2003 and can hold up to 3,700 people, according to Carnival Cruise's website. The investigators are working with Carnival Cruise Lines to obtain details of the unfortunate incident took place on the cruise ship. The investigation is ongoing, Miami-Dade police said.

Miami-Dade police said Saturday afternoon that the cruise ship had been turned back over to Carnival Cruise Lines in order for them to resume normal operations.
