Under Construction Flyover Crashes in Bhubaneswar, Kills One

Two persons are feared killed after a portion of an underconstruction railway flyover collapsed near Bomikhal in Bhubaneswar on Sunday.

About three-four persons were suspected to be trapped under the rubble, they added.

A report says that the deceased has been identified as a businessman from Bhubaneswar, Satya Patnaik (40).

Most of the injured persons were admitted to the Capital hospital, while two were admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhubaneswar. I deeply condole the bereaved family. He was returning home with his daughter who critically injured.

A communication from the chief minister's office (CMO) said stern action will be taken against those found guilty (both from construction firm and officials from the works department) during the course of the investigation.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh from Chief Minister's Relief Fund for kin of the deceased and free treatment for all the injured.

Police Commissioner Y B Khurania and senior officials are monitoring the rescue operations.

Though the Chief Minister apprised the House of the steps taken and issuance of an order for probe, the Opposition members were unhappy over the statement and demanded the CM's resignation. The work is was being executed by Panda Infra.

Congress leader Suresh Kumar Routray said the construction work was going on at slow pace for over 10 years and there was deliberate neglect to escalate the project cost for political funding.

Works secretary Nalini Kanta Pradhan and chief engineer (roads) Om Prakash Patel had rushed to the spot on hearing the news of the accident.
