Turkey to announce plan on KRG referendum, Erdoğan says

The results will be binding on President Masoud Barzani and the Kurdish government, which agreed to hold the referendum after a June 7 meeting.

Even the United States, which initially endorsed the referendum, has warned against dire consequences of the KRG's unilateral declaration of independence.

The regional parliament's decision came despite an intense diplomatic drive by the United States, which has provided critical military aid to the KRG's fight against Islamic State, to persuade the Kurdish leadership to cancel the referendum.

"The United States does not support the Kudistan Regional Government's intention to hold a referendum later this month", the White House said in a statement.

Iraq's parliament on Thursday voted to dismiss the Kurdish governor of the ethnically mixed Kirkuk province, in a move that could escalate tensions ahead of a planned Kurdish referendum on independence.

"To date, we have not received an alternative that can replace the referendum, the alternative that we wanted was not offered", he said.

Voters will face one question, asked in Kurdish, Arabic, Turkmen, and Assyrian: "Do you want the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI) and Kurdistani territories that are outside KRI to become an independent state?"

The UK Foreign Office said in order for the Iraqi Kurds to settle their disputes with the central government, they had better engage in dialogue with Baghdad and set aside plans for independence.

Iraq's neighbors, including Iran and Turkey, have also strongly objected to the decision.

"The referendum's legitimacy comes from the people of Kurdistan, not from the outside", he added.

Jowhar said the session was chaired by the Deputy Speaker, as Speaker Yousif Mohammed Sadiq did not attend the session since his Gorran Movement is boycotting the session along with the Kurdistan Islamic Group, Xinhua news agency reported.

Under this plan, a well-placed source told AFP, the worldwide community will oversee negotiations on revenue sharing in Iraq's oil budget and payment for Kurdish militia fighters.

The Iraqi Kurds fought an on-and-off insurgency for decades against the central government until the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003 enshrined Kurdish autonomy in the Iraqi constitution.
