Trump says Iran breaking 'spirit' of nuclear deal

Iranian state TV says President Hassan Rouhani will attend this year's U.N General Assembly meeting in NY and address the assembly on September 20. Trump has criticized the deal, but some of his top advisers believe he should preserve it.

The German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel explicitly stated that Germany is ready to cooperate with US, UK, and France to more exert pressure on the Islamic Republic of Iran to force Iranians to comply with their nuclear commitments. As dozens of retired Generals and Admirals wrote in a letter to Trump in July, the administration must "recognize the national security benefits of the nuclear agreement and appropriately weigh the risks to our troops of escalating tensions with Iran".

"The Trump administration is continuing to review and develop its policy on Iran", Tillerson said at a news conference with British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson in London.

"Iran is clearly in defiance of these obligations", Tillerson said, pointing to its support of Syrian President Bashar Assad's government, cyber activity and testing of ballistic missiles.

The pact negotiated between world powers and Iran trades sanctions relief for a rollback in Iran's nuclear activity.

Iranian officials, buoyed by an announcement by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) affirming its compliance with the 2015 nuclear deal, reiterated that its military sites remain off limits to inspectors.

Abandoning the deal, these experts warn, "would decrease the time it would take for Iran to obtain enough nuclear material for a warhead" and "increase the likelihood of wider conflict in the Middle East and could trigger a destabilizing nuclear competition in region". The agreement saw Iran sharply curtail its nuclear program and allow extensive inspections in return for the lifting of global sanctions.

In another, the White House elaborated. Congress mandated such checkups every 90 days and the next deadline is in October.

People familiar with internal discussions said Haley's team didn't work out her speech with Tillerson and his team in advance.

The current crisis with North Korea has been discussed often in this context - that tearing up the Iran deal would harm US credibility with North Korea as it tries to negotiate for Pyongyang to denuclearize.

Pushing a decision off on Congress would be similar to Trump's recent moves on other key policies, including immigration, health care and tax reform.
