Top LeT terrorist Abu Ismail, aide killed in encounter in Kashmir's Nowgam

Jammu and Kashmir Police on Thursday suspended 4G mobile internet services after top Lashkar-e-Toiba commander Abu Ismail was gunned down in Nowgam.

Abu Ismail had replaced Abu Dujana who was killed by security forces in Pulwama.

"The militants tried to escape by firing on the security forces".

The gunfight between militants and a contingent of police and army broke out at village Aarigam-Nowgam in the outskirts of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

Ismail was said to be behind the attack on a bus carrying pilgrims returning from the Amarnath shrine that claimed eight lives and injured at least a dozen people in July this year.

The killing of Abu Ismail is seen as a major success by the security forces in their continuing anti-militancy operations. "The terrorist was responsible for the attack on Amarnath Yatra", DG CRPF Rajeev Rai Bhatnagar told the news agency.

"The special thing about this operation is that it was based on wishes of people". Apart from Abu Ismail, Shabzar Bhar, Abu Jundal and other terrorists were encountered too. "Priority is to eliminate militant leadership because they lure the youth to militancy", the IGP said. He has been identified as Chhota Qasim.

Ismail could be the fourth top militant leader killed in Kashmir since past year. "The 50th battalion of Rashtriya Rifles did a good job", he said adding now there would be leadership vacuum in LeT. "He was also involved in several other attacks", DGP Kashmir SP Vaid said in the press conference. He took over after the killing of Abu Dujana.

Considering it to be a huge achievement, the police said that acting on a specific intelligence input, the security forces comprising the Army, CRPF and the SOG of the state police cordoned off the area where Ismail was hiding along with his accomplice.
