'Narcos' location scout shot dead in Mexico

The bullet-riddled body of Carlos Muñoz Portal, 37, was found in his auto in a rural area in the town of Temascalapa, in Mexico state, one of the country's most violent.

More broadly, though, Narcos was reportedly set to focus season four on Mexico's infamous Juarez cartel - and the fact that Munoz Portal was killed in that area and found "bullet-riddled" in his vehicle may speak for itself as far as who's responsible for the violence. He was reportedly found riddled with bullets in his auto in a remote area near Hidalgo, which is known to have one of the highest murder rates in Mexico. The first two seasons of the show looked at the rise and fall of Pablo Escobar, the leader of the Cartel de Medellin. In July, 182 cases of homicide were reported in the densely populated state, a ratio of 12.2 for every 100,000 inhabitants.

"We are aware of the passing of Carlos Muñoz Portal, a well-respected location scout, and send our condolences to his family", a statement to The News read. "The facts surrounding his death are still unknown as authorities continue to investigate what happened".

Muñoz had worked for the production company Redrum, which is based in Mexico City, was an active members of the film industry for more than a decade.

Authorities have not yet released any details about a potential motive or suspects. Nor confirmation either way had been made public by Netflix at the time of this writing.

The El Pais story continued: "The facts that led to the death of Muñoz Portal are not clear".
