MENCS: Kevin Harvick Captures Bojangles Southern 500 Pole at Darlington Featured

It was the seventh time in 25 races this season that Truex Jr. has qualified in the No. 2 position.

Through retro paint schemes, appearances by NASCAR legends on and off the track, and more, the Bojangles Southern 500 is turning Darlington Raceway into a giant motorsports time capsule.

Truex coming into the weekend in pretty good shape, as he has four wins this season, and is looking to become the first repeat victor at Darlington in 11 years. "So, I knew if I could just not get it in the corner at the wrong spot, that I had a little bit to get down there and they made the auto better", Harvick said.

Harvick had long said his team's switch to Ford racers this year would take some adjustment. Greg Biffle owns a pair of triumphs here, while Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin, Regan Smith, Matt Kenseth, Kevin Harvick and Martin Truex Jr. have one Darlington victory apiece. "Mentally, I was prepared for it to go either way. We've performed relatively well for the amount of workload and amount of things that have gone into switching manufacturers". But Hamlin slowly reeled in Truex and passed him when his rival brushed the wall and got a flat tire. "So seems like we've been second a lot this year and it's been a good number for us and hopefully it'll be a good one tomorrow night". The No. 18 vehicle will start from the third position after winning two weeks ago at Bristol Motor Speedway. Hamlin worked his way through the field and was in second with 20 laps to go, though he was six seconds back of Truex. He's won two his four races this year from that spot. Kyle Larson is fourth and Jamie McMurray fifth.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. will start his final Darlington race in 22nd. "I don't know", said Truex, who fell to an eighth-place finish. The defending NASCAR champion has just two top-10 finishes in his last 11 races, dropping him to 11th in the points standings.
