Judge breaks McGwire's rookie home-run record

Judge got off to a hot start this season with 10 home runs and 20 RBIs in the month of April.

Judge tied and then eclipsed McGwire's record in the Yankees' clash with the Kansas City Royals on Monday at Yankee Stadium.

It was fitting to see Judge go to right field with that. "And that's what he's done". In a season of alleged rebuild, Judge jammed the accelerator and shifted to reload gear. McGwire did it in 151 games and 547 at-bats.

Greg Bird added a two-run homer in the sixth, his seventh home run this season and fourth in nine games. He broke it off Trevor Cahill in the seventh, launching a changeup just to the left of the bullpen beyond left-center field.

"Especially in the minor leagues, you're always wondering about who's ahead of you and what's going to happen or if you're going to get called up or what's going on with the team ahead of you", Judge told The Trentonian in a 1-on-1 interview.

Judge has been red hot for the Yankees in September and has helped them secure a spot in the playoffs in a year where the Yankees were supposed to be rebuilding.

CC Sabathia earned the victory with six-plus solid innings.

"One thousand percent", Sabathia said when asked if Judge should be the MVP.

Now Judge is a homer away from the 50-home run milestone, which Girardi said "would be a great accomplishment" for the slugger. What's more, he also won the Home Run Derby in Miami. It is the third-best rookie RBI total in team history, trailing Hall of Famers Tony Lazzeri (114 in 1926) and Joe DiMaggio (125 in 1936). Meaning the Yanks will in all likelihood have a date with the Twins in the Wild Card Game next Tuesday, Oct. 3.

He hit No. 49 in the third inning, ripping it over the right-field wall for two runs to give the Yankees a 3-0 lead.
