Everton should pick Rooney despite drink-drive charge - Wright

Everton forward Wayne Rooney will be punished "internally" after being charged with drink-driving, manager Ronald Koeman said on Thursday.

The pregnant wife of former England captain Wayne was said to be ready to give him "one more chance" after his arrest for drink-driving at the wheel of another woman's auto last week. Sky Sports News understands that no club fines or punishment are likely before the legal process is complete.

And speaking ahead of the match with Tottenham, Everton boss Koeman said he was "very disappointed" with Rooney but also confirmed that he will feature at Goodison Park.

"We have spoken on Tuesday and the chairman Bill Kenwright spoke also to Wayne about this situation". Any disciplinary matter will be dealt with by the club at the appropriate time. "If I see that Wayne is not in a physical or mental condition to play then he won't play".

Wayne is due to appear in court on 18th September. The Senegalese worldwide has made just seven senior appearances for Everton since being brought to Merseyside from Lokomotiv Moscow by Roberto Martinez in February 2016 and spent the second half of last season on loan at Hull City after being completely frozen out by Koeman.

"At this time he is injured and it will take another two to two-and-a-half months until he is available".

One player who has definitely been given a second chance is Oumar Niasse, who has returned to the first-team squad for the first time since May 2016.

"To the end of this season he has his contract".

"He's told her he's willing to stop going out if that means she'll stay with him. I can't see what leaving him out of the team does", Wright told BBC Radio 5 live.
