Could Hodgson favourite Lambert be given a chance at Crystal Palace?

Crystal Palace are considering signing a free agent striker, reports the Evening Standard, with Christian Benteke having suffered a knee injury during the 5-0 defeat to Manchester City at the weekend.

Benteke was sent on Monday to see a specialist, who has confirmed that the player purchased previous year from Liverpool for an initial £26 million (S$47 million) has sustained minor ligament damage and is likely to be out for more than a month.

Benteke left the Etihad Stadium on crutches and will definitely miss Saturday's (September 30) Premier League clash with Manchester United, but fears are the ligaments could be damaged and therefore it could mean an extended spell on the sidelines for the 26-year-old.

His absence will leave Palace, who are yet to score or claim a point in the Premier League, without a recognised front man for about six matches either side of the global break. Crystal Palace had already lost their opening four Premier League games without scoring a goal before hiring Hodgson, tasked with keeping his local club in the top division.

"We think it's a form of ligament damage", Hodgson told Sky Sports after the City game.

Benteke's absence will hurt Palace, who are already without Connor Wickham, who has not played for nearly a year due to injury, and let Fraizer Campbell and Loic Remy leave the club in the summer.

"The initial thought that by the time the worldwide break comes around, he will be ready to join in training with the squad is still on course", said the former England manager. "We've got a large squad to choose from, which is very positive".
