Can Klopp's Liverpool maintain their hold over Manchester City?

Klopp then explained how the reunion with Coutinho went after the player returned from the global break.

It may be just the fourth round of Premier League matches this weekend, but Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has already predicted that Liverpool will be one of the title contenders this season.

The 25-year-old made two substitute appearances for his country during the global break, scoring in a 2-0 win over Ecuador.

The Reds boss claims Coutinho still loves the club despite the Brazilian handing in a transfer request to try to force a summer move to Barcelona.

Klopp also welcomed back Coutinho and nine other players to training on Thursday ahead of the resumption of club football, including Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah, Ben Woodburn, Danny Ward, Dejan Lovren, Joe Gomez, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dominic Solanke and Emre Can.

"I learned a lot in Germany the first time I played his team".

"He has a little problem in his calf and I don't think he will be able to play tomorrow".

"We said, 'Ok you are not going to travel to the States, because if you are not going to sign the contract you are going to stay here, and after that, the last two or three weeks he didn't appear in the training sessions".

Liverpool may have drawn their opening game against Watford but Klopp's men have been class since then; winning every game we've played.

"I knew I had to give my best and show what I could do in order to have a chance of coming here and becoming a City player".

"Nothing else to say, actually, so he's back and we had a really good conversation, so good".

"We always have the same decision to make: does he need training or can he play and all that stuff".

Klopp spoke of the importance of rhythm with his line-ups, as much as rotating to keep his regular starting players fresh, and noted the challenge of striking a balance. You have seem it many times. The attacking midfielder will miss the game against his former club after being sent off celebrating City's late victor against Bournemouth.

"So I have chose to leave him out of the squad for City".

"Before we start, we are not going to talk about transfers or Phil Coutinho - only the game", Plopped said during his pre-match press conference on Friday.

"He played for Belgium, in Gibraltar, [when] they won 9-0".
