Burning Man festival proceeding after death of man who ran into flames

The event on Saturday night is traditionally rowdy while the event Sunday night is the subdued burning of the Temple. What began as a bonfire honoring "radical self-expression" has turned into a massive week of visible consumption and Silicon Valley tech invasions.

This year's festival ends on Monday. He was quickly rescued from the fire and transported to UC Davis burn center, where he was pronounced dead.

Festivalgoers looked on in horror as the man raced towards a burning giant wooden effigy and was engulfed by the fire. He was one of approximately 700,000 attendees of the festival.

That's because the free-wheeling, don't-call-us-a-festival dedicated to radical self-expression and reliance in the middle of nowhere is nearly 4,000 feet above sea level.

A man attending Burning Man jumped into the festival's flaming centerpiece before horrified witnesses as firefighters tried to stop him.

"About 10:20 p.m. Saturday, Mitchell broke through two levels of safety perimeters at the Northern Nevada festival and ran straight into the active fire", the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.

"Now is a time for closeness, contact and community".

The man was rescued from the blaze, but he later died.

The premise of the Burning Man festival is that nearly everything is created entirely by its citizens, who are active participants in the experience.

The 138-square-mile (359-square-kilometer) wildfire is now 28 percent contained.
