Buckeyes Score 29 Unanswered Points To Thwart Hoosiers Upset Hopes

Head coach Urban Meyer of the Ohio State Buckeyes looks on while playing the Michigan State Spartans at Spartan Stadium on September 29, 2012 in East Lansing, Michigan.

By the first halftime of the year, always the utmost time to overreact, the stat sheet told of a same-old sameness. "And we looked like we hadn't in a while, didn't we?"

In fact, Cowherd said that Ohio State team he saw on Thursday night looks like the No. 1 team in the nation - of course, most teams have yet to play.

A charitable take on Ohio State's offensive showing is that the Buckeyes just needed some time to work out the kinks, to get comfortable with new coaches calling new plays involving a new cast of skill players. Big game for Campbell out of the box, particularly given that Ohio State's receiving corps was considered one of the team's question marks (relatively speaking) given their greenness.

"I'm disappointed in the finish", said head coach Tom Allen after his first game in charge on the home sideline.

So, naturally, the Buckeyes came out slinging and dinging and blasting off chunks of yardage like a slick new scarlet-and-gray air force, right?

It took the Ohio State Buckeyes some time to shake off the offseason rust, but when they did, the No. 2 team in the country showed why they're deserving of that ranking. That team was powered by Ezekiel Elliott and a trio of quarterbacks. Robert McCray III dropped quarterback J.T. Barrett for a sack and forced a hurry amongst his trio of solo tackles.

Ohio State: Meyer is 16-0 all-time in season openers.

Barrett kept the IU defense honest with a solid passing performance as well, throwing for more than 300 yards and three touchdowns.

Traveling on the road to face the Indiana Hoosiers - a program not particularly known for high-quality football - the Buckeyes appeared to be the heavy favorites to run all over them.

But for those who watched the game in its entirety, they know it wasn't that easy. You have to be consistent every quarter and every play. That gave IU a 21-20 lead. Those in the stands who'd traveled in from OH said nothing in response. Barrett then hooked up with Binjimen Victor for an 11-yard touchdown pass. Suddenly, it was 35-21 and the game felt over. That's expected to be a much more challenging game than this week's opener, though.

Ohio State eventually found their rhythm and pulled away in the second half, winning 49-21. Dixon hauled in 65 yards on only two catches. Ohio State freshman running back J.K. Dobbins was particularly troublesome, rushing for 181 yards by himself. Don't get caught up and get jawing with another player.

"The effort is there". Our receivers, I thought, played their tails off. The Buckeyes have National Football League talent all over the roster, and once everything started moving in the right direction we saw just how good this team can be.

"Not surprised at all", Meyer said.

The Buckeyes narrowed the deficit to 14-13 on Antonio Williams' 1-yard touchdown run with 2:55 left in the first half.

Ohio State is coming off a playoff appearance in 2016.

The fact that it was merely a glimpse might be the scariest part of all.

They worked out underneath the Memorial Stadium lights, to get acclimated to the glare. "We were only able to do a little bit of that tonight".

Mike Weber should get his starting job back next week.
