The commission's goal is to "study ways to combat and treat the scourge of drug abuse, addiction, and the opioid crisis".

But as the Trump administration funded state programs to combat the opioid crisis, the President pressured Republican lawmakers to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, a move that would have dramatically cut funding for addiction treatment - a key pressure point for Republican Sens.

The president is still reviewing a preliminary report on the opioid crisis from the President's Commission on Combating Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis, which he established in March, a White House spokesman told the Washington Post.

According to the White House, others participating in the opioid meeting include Richard Baum, the acting director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, First Lady Melania Trump, chief of staff John Kelly and senior advisers Jared Kushner and Kellyanne Conway. Prescription or synthetic opioid pain relievers - like Percocet, OxyContin and fentanyl - were implicated in more than two-thirds of opioid-related overdose deaths, the agency said.

The University of Virginia report concluded that death certificates from 2008 through 2014 and concluded the mortality rates were 24 percent higher for opioids and 22 percent higher for heroin than had been previously reported. "It's disappointing his mischaracterization of this epidemic ignores the great things this state has to offer".

"I am pretty ticked off", said Canterbury, who said she now regrets her vote for Trump and likely won't vote for him in 2020. "Everybody is threatened. Drug overdoses are the leading cause of accidental death in the United States".

And there are signs that the epidemic isn't abating.

The 12-month overdose death rate also showed an increase.

About twenty minutes earlier, Trump had tweeted a "Fox & Friends" segment on a new study showing America's opioid crisis is even worse than initially reported.

"Nobody is safe from this epidemic that threatens young and old, rich and poor, rural and urban", the president said at his Trump National Golf Club in New Jersey. "We must act boldly to stop it", the commission wrote in the report, unveiled Monday. "The first and most urgent recommendation of this Commission is direct and completely within your control".

"If that's not a national health emergency, I don't know what is", Christie said. "With approximately 142 Americans dying every day, America is enduring a death toll equal to September 11th every three weeks", the Commission's first report, published on July 31, reads.
