The Dark Tower Director Discusses What's Next After Film's Ending (SPOILERS)

All this on the calendar spot that last year's "Suicide Squad" bucked conventional release date wisdom with a record-breaking $133.7 million domestic opening. While the tepid adaptation of Stephen King's vast and beloved mythology wasn't exactly a bank-buster as far as its rumored $60 million budget is concerned, its inauspicious beginning is already casting doubt on the planned TV and feature franchise. The Dark Tower movie is underperforming thanks to poor word of mouth.

Glen Mazzara (The Walking Dead) is still expected to serve as showrunner on The Dark Tower television series, which is now in development, but its future may be in doubt after a disappointing weekend at the box office for the film. Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal's latest collaboration should end up with $7.3 million from 3,007 locations this weekend. "There's a lot of summer box office left and its global rollout is just starting to take off". The last Knight Warrior, Roland Deschain (Idris Elba), has been locked in an eternal battle with Walter O'Dim, also known as the Man in Black (Matthew McConaughey), determined to prevent him from toppling the Dark Tower, which holds the universe together. Previous directors like J.J. Abrams and Ron Howard (he's a producer on the movie) attempted over the years to adapt King's eight books into some kind of workable feature. The movie got the highest revenue from Russian Federation of $4.1 million out of $8 million from the 19 different markets. The Warner Bros. film had a three-day take of $17.6 million, according to industry website Exhibitor Relations.

The Emoji Movie saw a huge drop this weekend earning only $12.35 million. The movie stars Halle Berry as a mother attempting to rescue her son after he is taken.
