Samsung Announces Industry's First 6CA Cat.18 LTE Modem

Samsung Announces Industry's First 6CA Cat.18 LTE Modem

It is also in news that with this modem you will be able to download HD qualities movies in just 10 seconds. Well, this is a first in the industry, Samsung said, and an achievement that unlocks a max download speed of 1.2 gigabits per second (Gbps). The 6CA technology will allow the combination of six frequency bands. It will also, hypothetically, eliminate buffering during video calls and live-stream broadcasts.

Speeds with the modem have now been improved by 20 percent using carrier aggregation.

Samsung Galaxy S8 series and Xperia XZ Premium are those few flagship handsets which support Cat.16: (4CA) LTE technology with the max speed of 1000 Mbit/s. As The Verge highlights, carriers are still somewhat behind the times as Sprint only earlier this year added support for three-carrier aggregation.

Samsung's new modem achieves this speed through a combination of 6CA (carrier aggregation), 4x4 MIMO (multiple-input, multiple-output), and "higher-order 256 QAM (Quadrature amplitude modulation) scheme to maximize the data transfer rate".

Samsung's new Cat.18 6CA-supported LTE modem will be integrated with the company's mobile processors which are due to enter mass production by the end of this year.

That means the newest iPhone will nearly definitely be unable to take advantage of six carrier aggregation, a disadvantage that is unlikely to be noticed by most USA consumers.

Woonhaing Hur, Vice President of System LSI Protocol Development at Samsung Electronics, said: "With the increase of high-quality online content services, the demand for high-performance LTE modems continue to rise as well".
