QB Siemian to start preseason opener for Broncos

Thursday, in the Broncos' preseason opener against the Bears, Siemian will start and play approximately a quarter and a half before handing the keys to Paxton Lynch. Denver knows what they have in Siemian, and while it isn't much, Lynch simply hasn't taken the steps necessary to take over the starting job. It's also reporter Lynch will start the Broncos' second preseason game against the 49ers.

"He's first out, he's been first all training camp".

In last season's preseason opener - also in Chicago - Siemian was the second quarterback into the game, behind Mark Sanchez, and Lynch was the third quarterback into the game.

As the Broncos' offensive coaches have piled more and more of the playbook on the quarterbacks' plates, Siemian has been the more steady of the two in the last week, while Lynch had a spate of turnovers across several consecutive practices before he evened things out some Monday and Tuesday.

A similar play previous year by Lynch drew the ire of then-coach Gary Kubiak, who implored Lynch to "give your guys a chance!" Siemian was steadier and had a better completion percentage. In his column, Robinson says Siemian is ahead in the race by default.

Instead of the first-team offense going against the No. 1 defense, the top offense faced a scout-team defense. His sparse collection of good days has been - at best - on par with Siemian's good days. And Joseph often makes a point of noting what Lynch does right; after the scrimmage on Saturday, he pointed out that a 14-yard pass from Lynch to wide receiver Kalif Raymond was wiped out by a penalty on Donald Stephenson, who shoved a defender in the back after the play on the other side of the field.

Bolles isn't getting caught up in seeing his name atop the depth chart, saying he has four preseason games to really state his case and "I've got Donald and Ty pushing me".
